EWPR, Kennewick, WA.

The huge window in the front is dedicated to many of the parrots that we have here at the Kennewick Facility.  During the summers, we allow the birds to be outside on their stands or cages for the fresh air and wonderful warmth of the sun.

On the hotter days EWPR has the birds inside their outside cages that have misters, toys and a tarp to keep them cool and happy.

Blue & Gold Macaw

Blue and Gold Macaws are among the most strikingly beautiful of the Macaw Family. They are a full size Macaw and can learn to talk with a general vocabulary of about 15 or more words or expressions. Although some Macaws are one-person type birds, the Blue and Gold is right at home in a family type situation also.  They are a typical macaw. The Blue and Gold Macaw is known to be a good family type bird. Even so they can be cranky at times and may prefer only men or or only women

Blue-throated Macaw

As a companion the Blue-throated Macaw is very docile and affectionate, but also quite intelligent and inquisitive. Chewing and performing acrobatic antics are favorite activities as is exploring their surroundings with their tongue and beak. They are very elegant and inclined to be much more graceful in movement than other macaws.  Though they don't care to be handled quite as much as their close relative the Blue and Gold Macaw, they are undemanding and friendly. They are not inclined to bite nor are they not excessively loud as many of the other macaws can be. They are quite content to entertain themselves especially if given plenty of chewing materials. These qualities make them a wonderful pet or aviary bird that can be kept even where there are neighbors close

Hahn's Macaw

The Hahn's Macaw is the smallest of the three sub-species of Red-shouldered Macaw, a very tiny macaw reaching only about 12" (30 cm) in total length. "Lu" shown above was hand raised and is a male, he has been DNA sexed.   A hand raised Hahn's Macaw is an ideal bird for a beginner. This is because they have a very friendly social nature and are easy to take care of. They are small and easy to handle, they will breed readily, and they can be pretty fair talkers. An all around good choice for the inexperienced person who wants a larger parrot!

Hyacinth Macaw

The Hyacinth Macaw is calm and known to make an excellent pet. They are sweet, extremely gentle, and are not inclined to make a great deal of noise. They have a very even temperament. They are affectionate and playful, and become quite attached to their human families. They might possibly pick out one person for that special affection but Hyacinth Macaws are more inclined to being a part of the entire family and are good with children. If they are socialized at a young age, these macaws are also quite eager to meet and play with new humans.

Illiger's Macaw

Illiger's Macaw

The Illiger's Macaw or Blue-winged Macaw makes for a good pet because of its small size and high intelligence. However they are lively boisterous birds and so will require a generous living space. This very active, inquisitive, and amusing little parrot will investigating and chew everything in sight. They make great pets. This macaw is very active and needs room to stretch its wings. A flight area is very important energy outlet for these birds and they will prove to be quite artistic flyers. They are also very social and being kept with a companion will help avoid depression and loneliness.

Red-fronted Macaw

The Red-fronted Macaw, also known as the Red-cheeked Macaw or Lafresnaye's Macaw, is the smallest of the large macaws. They are fairly light green, with more intense green on the head and neck. They have red on the forehead, crown and a spot behind the eye, thus the common names; Red-fronted and Red-cheeked. The bend of the wing and along the front edges are an orange-red. The outer feathers of the wing are a gray blue and the tail is olive green with a blue tip. They have a smaller white to pinkish naked facial area, with the faint brown cheek feather tracings being restricted to just under the eye. The legs are dark gray, the beak is a gray-black, and the eye is orange.  A younger bird under six months old will be missing the red crown and the orangish red feathers on the wing edge. They also have orange under their wings and red on the legs.

Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet Macaw

Scarlet Macaws are a full sized macaw that are very colorful. They look like a rainbow starting with the head and shoulders a deep red changing to yellow about mid body, and finally blue and green on the lower part of the body and wings. The tail turns back to the deep red.  They are a typical macaw. Can be cranky at times and may be a one person bird or sometimes develop a liking for only men or women.  This bird is rarer than some of the other macaws (except perhaps the hybrid macaws) and may be a bit harder to get. Apparently their natural habitat has declined to the point where they were put on the endangered species list.

Severe Macaw

Severe Macaws or Chestnut-fronted Macaws are a mini-macaw, like the Hahn's Macaw. They are predominantly green with patches of red and blue on the underside of the wings.  They can be noisy but with a little attention they will calm down and be very good pets. Usually they make noise in the morning because they are so excited to have the cover removed from their cage and they like to be fed.

Picture of a "Mariah", a Maui Sunset Macaw (hybrid)

Maui Sunset Macaw

Being a hybrid cross between a Blue and Gold Macaw and a Red-fronted Macaw, the Maui Sunset macaw will have unique influences both in color and in personality. Hybrids have been traditionally bred for color. So being able to attribute personality traits to a hybrid are factors that are quite unknown. The playful Blue and Gold however, is one of the better talkers of the macaws. The smaller Red-fronted Macaw is quite docile and affectionate, but is also known to be quite loud.

Picture of a Ruby Macaw

Ruby Macaw

The Ruby Macaw is a hybrid cross between a Scarlet Macaw and a Green-winged Macaw and is quite attractive. Hybrids are usually bred for color rather than personality, so their characteristics can be uncertain.    The personality of a Scarlet is such that it requires good socialization and a firm consistent hand in training, especially as it matures. The Green-wing is a very gentle, affectionate and sensitive macaw. The Ruby can have the characteristics of the Scarlet, but it can also incorporate the gentle nature of the Green-winged. Ruby Macaws can be a very affectionate and playful, good talkers, and fun pets that are very beautiful.

Buffon's Macaw

Highly endangered birds, the Buffon's Macaw are extremely rare in the wild. Though this macaw has been quite scare they have proven to be good breeders in captivity. Today the Buffon's Macaw is not only becoming more available, but a few captive bred birds have also been re-introduced into the wild in some areas of its native habitation.  As a companion, the Buffon's Macaw is quite docile and affectionate. Even breeding pairs have been known to be friendly. Like all macaws they are also quite intelligent and inquisitive. They are considered to be fair talkers and are excellent at learning tricks. These birds are very social and make wonderful pets.
